The Pletzl, (פלעצל, "small place" in Yiddish, "place Saint-Paul" or "place des Juifs", as opposed to the big place, that of the Vosges) is the most famous Jewish quarter of Paris, dating from thirteenth century. It is located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. On some occasions, even today, merchants set up their stalls directly on the street. This is the case, for example, before the Sukkot festival, where there are merchants offering the four species. Similarly, there are still a few newsagents installed on the sidewalk. We regularly come across members of the Lubavitch movement, recognizable by their Borsalino hats, who offer to "put the tefillin" to those who have not yet done so. We finally come across an illustrious beggar, the famous "schnorrer in the rue des Rosiers". On Thursday and Friday morning, in the bakeries in the neighborhood, you can buy 'hallot (חלות), the braided brioches served on Shabbat. Friday evening and Saturday, as well as on Jewish holidays, everything is closed. On the other hand, Sunday is an ordinary working day (all the more crowded as the district is now pedestrianized on Sunday).
